What It Takes to Renovate a 200-Year-Old NYC Townhouse into a Modern Masterpiece
A landmark SoHo townhouse, initially built in 1826, has been entirely reimagined by Gallery Kitchen & Bath. The 4,500-square-foot Federal-style home underwent a complete renovation that blends its historic character with a contemporary design sensibility.

A Hidden Piece of History in the Walls
During demolition, Gallery’s team discovered 56 Prohibition-era wine jugs hidden in the brick walls of the basement. The bottles had been stashed away for decades, offering a rare glimpse into the home’s long history.
This unexpected find added another layer of personality to the project and reinforced the goal of preserving as much of the original architecture as possible.
High-End Renovation with Smart Planning
Due to the townhouse’s narrow access points and three-story layout, materials and fixtures were lifted directly to the upper floors using a boom truck. Gallery handled all permits and coordinated closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure compliance with preservation guidelines.
The home received extensive upgrades to its plumbing, electrical wiring, and HVAC systems. These behind-the-scenes improvements were essential to support the clean, modern aesthetic seen throughout the interiors.
Where Historic Detail Meets Modern Design
In the kitchen, high-gloss white cabinetry contrasts with a matte black appliance wall, creating a minimalist yet dramatic look. Rift-cut oak floors in a herringbone pattern run throughout the home, bringing warmth and texture to the open spaces.
The primary bathroom was designed to feel like a spa, with a floor-level wet area featuring a freestanding soaking tub and a rainfall shower. Carrara marble surfaces and brushed brass fixtures provide a timeless finish without overwhelming the room.
Throughout the home, original elements such as exposed brick and traditional moldings were carefully preserved and integrated into the updated design.
